Camera Obscura - New Website

Camera Obscura have a new website and one of the better ones I've seen who have used Flash which I personally hate.

The band will be heading to Stockholm in September to begin recording the follow-up album to 2004's "Underachievers Please Try Harder" and they will be working with the Concretes producer Jari Haapalainen so I wonder if they will be aiming for a Swedish indie-pop vibe. They will also be playing London's Waterrats on the 29th November - my ticket is here already!

Those in North America can download all of the Camera Obscura albums for free if they are not an existing subscriber and sign up to e-music's 50 free mp3 trial.

New Contributors

There will be two new contributors joining the indie mp3 blog so it's a big welcome to Trev from Lost Music and Magnus from Dýrðin who will be contributing on a semi regular basis.

A big thanks to both for helping out and I will be editing the template to refelect the changes on my return from a long weekend pounding the hils around Barmouth.

If you want to be a contributor to this blog e-mail me at blog at indie-mp3 dot co dot uk

The Dentists

The Dentists, whose debut album "Some People are on the Pitch They Think It's All Over It is Now" has just been re-released on Revola, have a new web presence courtesy of the bands guitarist Bob Collins. The new site has plenty on the history of the band, discography and an extensive gigography and checking it includes the gigs I saw them play including a very sparsely attended gig at the Amersham Arms in 1992! The site also features some rare mp3 tracks for downloading.

The Dentists - Butterfly (Demo)
The Dentisist - Writhing On The Shagpile (Live)

More tracks can be downloaded from the sounds page.

Santa Dog - Live Tracks

Rowena from the excellent Santa Dog e-mailed me to say that the band have two live dates lined up for London. They will be playing the following:

Weds 19th October (9pm) - 333 Club, Old St.
Sat 10th December (8.30) - Water Rats

I really like this band based on their two EP's so far and have yet to see them live. I hope to make the Water Rats gig to catch their sound which can be described a cross of Throwing Muses meeting The Delgados.

More dates are planned in and around their native Bristol, the details of which can be found on their gigs page.

Rowena also kindly sent me two mp3's recorded at a recent live show and has kindly let me post them for you. She claims that "they are pretty raw (vocals a bit cronky and dubious tuning in places) but it's a snapshot of sorts" but I thnk they are pretty decent recordings compared to some of the other band's wares on the net i've downloaded. The recordings catch a band that hopefully will soon be going places.

Santa Dog - Katy

Pixies Remix

More from Get Your Bootlegs On in the shape of a remix of The Pixies "Tame". I'm not one for dancin' but even this one may get me onto the dancefloor which is not a pretty site I can assure you!

Pixies - Tame (McSleazey Remix Edit)
Pixies - Tame (McSleazey Remix Extended)

Teahing the indie kids to dance indeed!

(Via) original GYBO Thread

If you search the board at GYBO you will find some Pixies mashups some of which are very interesting!

For Mash get Smash!

I haven't been over to Get Your Bootlegs On for a time now. The site features mash-ups which is generally the music from one track with the vocals of another imposed.

I downloaded a few (some were bad) but I found two versions of a track which mixed Bloc Party (Banquet) with the Pussycat Girl's "Don't Cha" (erm who?) which were definately my faves!

Block Party "Banquet" v. Pussycat Dolls "Don't Cha'" - Aggro 1 Mix
Block Party "Banquet" v. Pussycat Dolls "Don't Cha'" - Dunproofin Mix

Out of the two I prefer the first as it seems to have a bit more about it. The original thread can be found here.

Do You Want To........

contribute to the indie-mp3 blog? Due to other commitments I will now be away from the computer a couple of days a week and to fill the blanks I'm looking for one or two like minded souls who will write about C86, indie-pop, lo-fi, lo-fi electronica, indie folk etc in order to help discover both new and old bands.

If you are interested and even have another blog let me know or if anyone has any ideas on how this blog can be developed please drop me a line with your (polite) suggestions. The blog e-mail address is blog at indie-mp3 dot co dot uk

The Legendary 10 Seconds - New Track!

Indie MP3 can bring you another exclusive track from the Dorset based lo-fi indie-folk outfit The legendary 10 Seconds.

I have featured the band on more than occassion and they have released two albums on the Golden Pathway label. Ian Churchward writes on the Flaxley Green site:

The nucleus of the Legendary 10 seconds is myself and my stepson Guy Bolt and we sometimes gets some friends in to help out. I play 6 , 12 string and bass guitar and do pretty much all the vocals. I think Guy did do some backing vocals on one tune once but that hasn't appeared on CD yet. Guy plays drums, percussion, harmonica, keyboards, 6 string and bass guitar. I remember now that getting into folk music all came about when Guy helped out Nigel Howells old band called Storm Force Ten when they needed a drummer at short notice and then the guitarist left and I stepped in. That must have been about 6 years ago.

Anyway back to the track which is fresh from the studio as they say!

The Legendary 10 Seconds - What Else

These are links (May 2005 - January 2005) to my previous posts and the exclusives tracks mentioned are still available.

You can download three more tracks from the Flaxley Green site - you will need to scroll down to find them!

Bad Animal

Bad Animal is one Shawn Gallagher who hails from the States. Bad Animal will be releasing their debut CDR soon on Puissant. Titled "The Hunted" it features 9 tracks which are lo-fi electronica based and remind me of Swedens Le Sport (formerly Eurosport) a band I have featured a couple of times on this blog.

The record label states: The Bad Animal is a ferocious breed, indigenous to the Tallahassee region. He hooks his prey with catchy Casio beats and rhythms, and kills them slowly with lyrics of heartbeats and heartbreaks. He is formerly a member of world famous bands Sweet Pickles and Plastic Mastery, and operated the second greatest cassette label of the late 90s, Insane Records. The Hunted is his debut album, to be released in limited quanties with lavish packaging.

Three tracks from the album are available online alongside a non album track "You Shouldn't Lie" which happens to be my favourite. It's very 80's sounding so i'm showing my age again!

Bad Animal - Golden Globe
Bad Animal - You Shouldn't Lie

Bad Animal do not have a webpage at present. However head over to their music download.com page and download the other two tracks.

Nixon - The One Track A Week EP

Indie MP3 Faves Nixon have started their latest web project which is the release of "Pictures Of Patty - the One Track A Week EP"

Albert from the band explains "We will be releasing one song a week and the first one is Greatest Song (shalala). I guess the EP will have four or five tracks because we have some good new ones which we might also add. We are mixing a few of them this week."

"Greatest Song (Shalala)" is an example of what the band do best. 1960's inspired lo-fi indie pop thats great to listen too as the Autumn draws in.

Nixon - Greatest Song (Shalala)

Head to their site to download two more EPs. Remember to check the site as new tracks from "The Pictures Of Patty" are released.

Naimi - Again!

After I posted about Naimi last week I ventured over to her guestbook with a request for some information in English if available. Today Naimi replied and she writes:

Hello Tom!

You wanted some info about my music. I will make a homepage in English soon but for now I can give you this info:

My name is Kristin Eklund and I'm 26 years old. I've been making music under the name Naimi for about seven years. When i do the music I use synthesizers, piano, organ, guitar and my computer. Some of my songs are instrumental, some of them I sing on.

In 2001 I released a 7" of organ-songs on the record label Benno. The song "Ödevata" on the homepage is taken from that release. This summer Music is my Girlfriend released an EP called "Lagom är sämst" (which means something like "Normal is worst").

In November a newly started record label will release a CD called "Det är jag som bestämmer inte du" (translates to "It's me who decides not you"). Of the songs on the homepage, "Miss you", "Hej solen", and "Kroksjö" will be on the record.

If you want more info, ask me.

I asked Naimi to keep in touch with her schedule. In the meantime enjoy another song from her website which will be on the forthcoming EP:

Naimi - Miss You

More Fire Engines

Just some quick links to supplement yesterdays post.

First up is this site which has some nice scans and history of the band.

This Live Journal entry has a photograph and a live track from the band's gig in December last year. Sadly the writer writes some crap about the band's return. Maybe he's upset he cannot brag he has seen The Fire Engines anymore.

Finally the new Fire Engines Message board can be found here.

The Fire Engines - Rare Live Tracks!

I saw the Fire Engines last night playing their first London gig for over 20 years at the ICA. It was a short but thoroughly entertaining set despite no "Candyskin" being played.

To celebrate this fact I have posted the entire Buddhist Monk On Fire Stickers on the main site. Only a 100 of these CD's were pressed. For more details on the band and to download the tracks visit the Indie MP3 Featured Tracks Of the Week page.

A compilation titled "Codex Teenage Premonition" is being released by Domino on the 26th of this month.

Bits and Bobs

I saw The Envelopes again on Thursday night and they were excellent. Hopefully my review will be up on Sounds XP soon.

Dave Newton, ex Lemon Drop, e-mailed me regarding my Lemon Drops Site. He has found that VH1 have all the Lemon Drops videos bar one on-line. It took me back a few years watching them although the Derek Jarman directed video for "Out Of Hand" is still as poncey as I remember LOL! Dave also added that ex Lemon Drop bassist Marcus Williams is playing bass again with Vinny Peculiar along side ex- The Smiths drummer Mike Joyce & former Smiths guitarist Craig Gannon - in fact Marcus replaced Andy Rourke, who quit the band!

Martin from They Live By Night a band I featured back in August wrote to say that the band are now signed to Razzia Records in Sweden and their debut self titled EP is out in stores now. They have also made a comletely new website, all in English, because of the great demand from outside Sweden which I hope was in part due to me! Samples from the EP are online and are well worth a listen.

The mailbox has been busy this week! Angus from The Relationships e-mailed me with some news. He wrote that "the new CD by the Relationships, Scene, has just been released on Trailer Star Records of Nottingham. It's our second - the first was Trend, which came out on Twee Kitten Records of California. I guess it counts as C86-type indie - one of my old bands was Razorcuts and the singer was in the Anyways." Sadly no previews are available but given the pedigree mentioned it could be worth a gamble. You can buy it from the band's site for £10 - Paypal accepted.

Russell who runs Freedom Road Records writes to say the Wallpaper Silhouettes album, "Echo The World (We Live In)", is available for just £5. This offer is for September only. I have featured this Norwegian band a few times before and if you like Orange Juice/Josef K influenced bands then they could well be for you.

Wallpaper Silhouettes - A Need To Know
Wallpaper Silhouettes - Autumn Love
Wallpaper Silhouettes - The Marauder

Phew!

Naimi

I don't know a lot about Naimi as the site is in Swedish. I can make out that Naimi is one Kristin Eklund who comes from Stockholm. Her music is keyboard orientated lo-fi and reminds me very much of Steso Songs and Compute. This really is recorded in the bedroom stuff. I love the sci-fi sounds of "Hej Solen" and the beautiful Erik Satie inspired ambient sounds of "Kroksjo". "Test" is more Detroit inspired and reminds me of the so called Intelligent Techno of yesteryear.

Naimi - Hej Solen
Naimi - Kroksjo
Naimi - Test

Visit Naimi's site to download two more tracks.

Le Man Avec Les Lunettes

Le Man Avec Les Lunettes are an Italian band, with a French name and sing in English.

The band was born in the 2004 through the collaboration between Fabio B. and Ale P. (lumière electrique). They have released a debut composing by songs that are bundled up in the pop spirit with influence of Belle & Sebastian, Blur, Beatles, Beach Boys. Sadly I cannot find any mp3's to download but you can stream the tracks here.

On a side note the Lumiere Electrique stuff is quite good. It's more electronically orientated as the name suggests -, download an appearance on Italian Radio here.

The Known Unknowns

‘The are known knowns – things which we know we know, know unknowns – things which we know we know we don’t know, and unknown unknowns, things which we don’t know we don’t know.’

Donald Rumsfeld

Known Unknowns have been in existence in some form for the best part of a decade. A good deal of that time was spent ‘paying the dues’ as one of that vast and terrible army of bands up and down the country playing vaguely angsty rock and, inevitably, calling themselves The Shards.

Over the last year, however, that unfortunate affliction has been cast aside and, with the help of a natty quote from Donald Rumsfeld vis a vis US intelligence on Al Qaeda and Iraq’s weapons, the band gave itself a new name and a collective kick up the backside. Demonstrating his unstinting, febrile commitment, lead singer Neil Walsh went and purchased no less than 100 jiffy bags to facilitate, as your boss might say, the cause.

Known Unknowns have since got on with the business of writing spiky, distinctive songs about the misinformation campaigns of advertisers, politicians, pop stars, actors, marketeers, lawyers and business leaders who think that what they do is either too profound, too dishonest or too dull to be expressed in normal language.

The Known Unknowns - Solidarity

Two more mp3's can be downloaded from their site.

The band play next on 21/09/05 at The Bull and Gate, Kentish Town, North West London.

Bluffington

Bluffington are a lo-fi indie/electronica outfit hailing from somewhere in the United States. Comprising Kenyon (vocals, guitar, keyboard) and Lizz (keyboard, vocals) they are influenced by the likes of My Bloody Valentine, The Flatmates and Slowdive amongst others. These are clever lo-fi songs:

Bluffington - Interpol Plays Too many Shows
Bluffington - That Ain't Bad

The band do not have a homepage. Instead head over to their My Space page to stream and download tracks.

Kenyon also has two blogs being titled Advance Copy and The Mainline respectively. The latter looks good for streaming radio shows with such artists like The Acid House Kings, Joy Division, Spacemen Three and many others!

Le Sport

Le Sport used to be Eurosport before the TV Company of the same name got them to change it but not before they had released a CDR under that name.

The CDR titled " Tell No One About Tonight"has now been re-issued on the new label from Songs I Wish I Had Written and features remasters from the original release and two new mixes of the title track as well.

Le Sport - Tell No-one About Tonight

The band make wonderful 1980's inspired dance music and are soon to release an album. To celebrate this fact they have made a track from it available as a taster. It's cracking stuff as i'm sure you will agree!

Le Sport - I Comes Before You

Head to their website to download some more tracks or buy the EP from Songs I Wish. You had better be quick!

The Envelopes - Live Demons

I saw The Envelopes last night for the first time and what can I say, being blown away by their C86 meets The Pixies and/or Pavement sound. The band, a mix of Swedes and French nationals, now based in York, are promoting their new album "Demon" which is getting plenty of rave reviews at present.

They were not even hampered by the small surroundings of Project Orange, a venue i've have not been to before but given their range of American Ales I may well be back! It was not as tiny or cramped as the Betsy Trotwood but did not have a stage. However that did not seem to bother the band or audience one iota despite such close quarters. A cracking gig given that i've only heard the debut single "It's The Law" previously but on this performance alone I will be excitedly getting my hands on the album.

The band will be playing the Montague Arms in New Cross on Thursday September 15th 2005. If you are in London and not doing anything that night do yourself a favour and get down there. In the meantime listen to the debut single and one of it's b-sides.

The Envelopes - It's The Law
The Envelopes - Audrey In The Country

You can also stream tracks from the new album via their myspace page.

EDIT: SoundsXP's review of the gig is now up.

A new Fire Engines Compilation. And Live Dates!

Hot on the heels of their Postcard era Orange Juice compilation Domino Records are to release a Fire Engines compilation which compiles previously unreleased live recordings and studio outtakes from 1980 – ‘81. The track listing is:

1. Sympathetic Anaesthetic
2. Get Up And Use Me
3. Hungry Beat
4. Everything's Roses
5. The Untitled One (Codex sessions recorded by Wilf Smarties)
6. 12.01.81
7. Meat Whiplash
8. Discord
9. Get Up And Use Me
10. New Thing In Cartons
11. Plastic Gift
12. Hungry Beat (Live from Edinburgh, Valentinos, 09.08.81)
13. The Untitled One
14. Everything's Nothing
15. Discord (debut gig 16.03.80, Leith Community Centre, Edinburgh)

However it does not include the Peel Sessions and Fascist Groove Thing which was later covered by Heaven 17.

The band reformed for a couple of dates last year and will be playing on Sunday 11th September at Optimo, Sub Club, Glasgow and the following weekend at London's ICA. Tickets are £9 and £10 respectively.

The band had their released material compiled by Creation, on 1992's "Fond" which has been sadly out of print and fetches a few bob on e-bay so this release follows a much needed void and will help give Franz Ferdinand a few more ideas for their tunes. It will be released on September 26th 2005.

Indiepop Top 100 Albums

The Italian e-fanzine Indiepop. It has published what it considers to be the top 100 indie-pop albums.

Indiepop Top 100

Some of the choices are a bit strange. I mean The Charlatans?

Top 10's anybody?

The Postcards

The Postcards are South London based band and as you may guess were named after the Scottish label, Postcard and they certainly take influences from that label with their harmonious indie-pop sound. I also hear a bit of Merseyside in there whether it's The Beatles or The La's. Others have described them sounding like The Lucksmiths.

They have not yet released any tracks but have a demo available.

The Postcards - Hey Girl
The Postcards - Stay Home

There are more tracks to download from their site.

Heikki

If you read my review about Records Make Great Pets you will know that Heikki's track on the compilation, "Former Hero", was far and away my favourite.

Heikki are Jari Haapalainen (guitars) and Maria Eriksson (vocals). Maria is also a member of The Concretes whilst Jari is a member of the Bear Quartet. The band started in 1999 and have released two albums so far being "Heikki" and "Heikki 2" released in 2002 and 2004 respectively.

Their one and only single (so far) "Former hero" is a cracker. See what you think.

Heikki - Former Hero
Heikki - I Always Knew

Heikki's material can be brought from Magic Marker Records or Rough Trade.

Records Make Great Pets

Continuing on the Stereo Test Kit Records theme (see yesterday's posts) "Records Make Great Pets" is a compilation and first in a series at collating indie-pop on a country by country basis. It's no surprise then that volume one is Sweden and I have had this compilation on my CD player for a couple of weeks now.

If you want to know what I thought of it my review is up on SoundsXP.

Tracks from the album:

Club 8 - Cold Hearts
Chasing Dorotea - The Anchor Song

The album costs just £6.99 and is available direct from the label. And in case anyone is wondering after today's and yesterday's post I do not have any connection to the label - well apart from the love of great music!

More Labrador Releases on Stereo Test Kit

As well as the Club 8 releases (see post below) Stereo Test Kit have also reissued albums from Laurel Music and Chasing Dorotea which were previously available on Labrador. These are "This Music And The Night" and "Chasing Dorotea" respectively.

Laurel Music - The Way Love Goes
Laurel Music - Dreams And Lies
Chasing Dorotea - Dreamer

Additionally there is a new release from Audrey who were not signed to Labrador. Titled. somewhat imaginatively, the "Audrey EP" it comprises three tracks of which "Box, And Fights" is simply stunning! SoundsXP have reviewed the EP previously.

Audrey - Box, And Fights

All the releases can be brought direct from Stereo Test Kit Records with Paypal being accepted.

Club 8 - UK Re-issues

Club 8 have had their back catalogue re-released in the UK on Stereo Test Kit Records. The latest album to be released is "Strangely Beautiful" and follows "Spring Came, Rain Fell" and the self titled debut. I presume the releases have been licensed from Labrador.

Club 8 - Saturday Nght Engine
Club 8 - The Chance I Deserve
Club 8 - Spring Came, Rain Fell
Club 8 - Keeping Track Of Time
Club 8 - Falling From Grace

You can read SoundsXP review of "Strangely Beautiful" here. The albums can be brought direct from Stereo Test Kit Records and Paypal is accepted.

Easing Back

Just a few links courtesy of e-mails I have received over the past 10 days.

Firstly Magnus who is Pet Politics has posted a new track and mighty fine it is too.

Pet Politics - The Ghost Mary And Her Friends

Indie Interviews could almost be self explanatory! This is a new site which has interviews with indie artists available as podcasts. Despite myself being unaware of any of the bands it does seem a good idea and worth a listen. There are five interviews up with more to come.

Belfast's Panda Kopanda have their first single out at present and you can buy it direct from their site as Paypal is accepted. I've mentioned this lot before nad they seem to be getting some well deserved interest. They have also overhauled their website too.

Panda Kopanda - Letting Go

Two more tracks are available from their site.

Finally for this update Imperial Recordings are a new Swedish label based in Stockholm. They have recently signed five artists to their label. They are José González, Eskju Divine, Melpo Mene, Martin McFaul and TLS. Melpo Mene features on the Records Make Great Pets compilation - more on this over the next couple of days but in the meantime head to Melpo Mene's site and stream their recordings.

Back To The Rat Race

Well I'm home a few fdays earlier than expected but it was nice to have a break in Cymru drinking plenty of Cwrw Haf (Summer Beer in English) in the hot Welsh sun - the Evan Evans one was the better pint all round for me. We stayed in the middle of nowhere with Lampeter the nearest town which is over three miles away so plenty of walks were in order. We also visited Llangrannog (again!) and stayed at the Pentre Arms, a pub in which Dylan Thomas was a very naughty boy!

It's amazing how being so remote replenishes the mind and body for the return to Hackney!

Has any English speaker who visits this blog ever learnt Welsh? If so was it difficult and what method/course did they use? I'm pondering learning......

Anyway my inbox was full of e-mails on my return and I hope to get through them over the coming week although why I was sent a Princess Superstar remix I will ever know.

In the meantime have I missed anything on the music front?
