We Rule The School

We Rule The School is a new blog concentrating on indie music. Pop over and have a look!

Edwyn Collins

I have been without access to a PC for the past couple of days. I am sure some of you may have heard about the story below but if not read on.

Singer Edwyn Collins, known for fronting 1980s band Orange Juice and his 1990s solo success, is seriously ill after a brain haemorrhage. A spokesman said he suffered a cerebral haemorrhage on Sunday night. "He has been in hospital since, where doctors are
trying to stabilise his condition," he added.

More on the story can be found here. Obviously indie-mp3 wishes him well in his recovery.

The Rumble Strips

The Rumble Strips are a London based band although their members are Devon born and bred.

Lost Music compares them to Dexy's Midnight Runners and I can see the link. They also remind me of Courdroy United, a band on the Swedish Labrador label. I downloaded a couple of their tracks with "Hate Me" being my favourite. It's good to see a band not constrained by a bass, guitar and drums as the trumpet/sax certainly breath life into the songs. The band certainly have a get up and go drive about them.

Head over to their site to download four more excellent, high quality mp3 tracks.

All Of MP3

Russian download site, Allofmp3.com is under investigation by the police in Russia after complaints about it's legality. Whilst offering a model other download services should follow questions have been raised about the site which sells music for a little as one US cent per MB of music. The site claims to be legal but this is disputed by the IFPI. The site is very popular with those in Western Europe and the States because of it's cheap prices.

Read more about the story here whilst this is an earlier story when the site first emerged.

a pop alÞing

If you like Scandanavian indie-pop a new blog has arrived on the scene. Titled a pop alÞing its in it's infancy but already has links to some fine tracks by sambassadeur and múm. I will be glued to this one!

New Order Krafty Video

View it online here.

You can download both Krafty and the title track of the forthcoming album "Waiting For The Sirens Call" on from Scenestars. Believe you me when I say these are the best two tracks on the album. The promo I heard was very disappointing.

Wedding Present Concert For Download

Bradley's Almanac has posted a Wedding Present concert, "Live at the Astoria Theatre, London, July 7th, 1992". Which ties in nicely for their current tour.

The tracks have been posted over two weeks. The first post is here and the second post is here.

CD Buying

I have been off work for the past week using up my ample supply of leave! Thought I would be constructive and go out and buy some CD's, instead of ordering over the net, to dig into that list of wants I have.

I purchased all three Field Mice re-issues on LTM. These are re-releases of their albums coupled with singles as extra tracks and are well worth picking up. They are Skywriting, Snowball and For Keeps. If you have not got any music by this fine band I suggest that you should.

You may be aware that some of the Field Mice later became The Trembling Blue Stars whose last album, The Seven Autumn Flowers was released late last year. Some fine tracks on this album including the single "Helen Reddy" which appeared on the Southern Skies Appear Brighter EP.

Despite being an indie kid I also like the odd bit of "electronica" now and again. I picked up '64 - '95 by Lemon Jelly, Destroy Rock & Roll by Mylo and LCD Soundsystem by erm, LCD Sound System! The latter two choices would not have been brought by and would have been lost to me if I had not had heard the albums via other mp3 blogs. I won't repeat what I have said on this blog before suffice to say I cannot believe that people would rather have mp3 copies of albums than the real thing!

What have you been buying lately - anything interesting and worth a mention?

Psst. Ask Sam

Same & Me are a Brighton based two piece consisting of Sam Pridell and Rowan Dawes. They play a sort of Brian Wilson inspired medlodic pop and have also been compared to erm, Simon & Garfunkel in some of the reviews I have read. It's either true or lazy journalism just because there are two of them!

They have just released a new internet only single titled "Ex" and mighty fine it is too. I will not directly link the the track as they are asking for donations from anyone downloading it to help finance their next single.

Head over to their download page where you can download "Ex", it's artwork and some other mp3's including their demo. The mp3's are of a high quality and well worth a listen.

As for the title of the post it relates to a Wedding Present posting at SVC which ties in with today being another commercial ripoff, sorry I mean Valentines Day!

The Invisible Cities

San Francisco based The Invisible Cities have released their debut album "Watertown". The album, a nice mix of lo-fi pop comes with the classic indie girl/boy vocals that I am a sucker for. You can stream the whole album from here. I really like the tracks "Oh Yeah" and "Take My Picture" which would not have been out of place on Sarah Records!

Also on their site are mp3's of their demo and a cover of New Order's Regret.

The album is available direct from their site.

Built To Spill

On one of the blogs I visit there was a link to Built To Spill's "Keep It Like A Secret" album. Never heard of the band but great name. Anyway it took just one listen before ordering from Amazon (who must make a mint via MP3 blogs)- brilliant does not do it justice. A quick search about the band revealed the album dates back to 1999. I don't know anything more about the band except for what I have read on the links below. The track is courtesy of epitonic.

More Heads In The Sand

The excellent Chips & Cookies has been forced to close by the IFPI Belgium. Seems the music industry is stepping up it's attacks on mp3 blogs.

Chips and Cookies did not actually post any music. The blog creator posted links to music collections posted on servers. I am sure I remember a case in Sweden where the court ruled that it was not illegal to do this as the person being tried could not be held reponsible what others placed on the net.

It's a shame as I came across music I was unlikely to hear via Chips & Cookies and yes I did purchase the CD's of the ones I liked. As I have stated before I think there are conections between mp3 blogs and buying music but according to the labels and those who represent them there is not. Well considering sales of singles in the UK are at an all time high despite the digital revolution I would say this disproves their theory.

Any thoughts?

RIAA Sues Dead Grandmother

That's right. The moral guardians of audio, the RIAA, who have previously sued a 12 year old girl have now sued an 83 year old grandmother for being a music sharing pirate. The one snag is that the lady in question is deceased. The RIAA say file sharers are evil - well at least they are not lowlife who are beneath contempt as this story shows.

Review Links

Here are some links for reviews I have written for Sounds XP recently:

The Crack Babies - Smoking At Gas Stations
Mighty Lemon Drops - Young Gifted & Black Country
Love Ends Disaster - Stories For The Dislocated

Note that I'm not the greatest writer in the world!

Love Ends Disaster

I have just heard the Love Ends Disaster demo EP and talk about jaw dropping. This lot are going to be huge mark my words.

I can hear Gang of Four, British Sea Power, Postcard Records , Echo And The Bunnymen and others in their tunes. Looks (and sounds like) they have mixed all the right ingredients.

The EP is out on 28th February on Denial Records and you can pre-order it from Rough Trade. In the meantime take a listen:

The Kills

The record comapnies are running scared of mp3 blogs. They have shut some down despite not getting the connection between being exposed to music you have not heard before (and not likely to either) via mp3 blogs and then helping the industry by purchasing said music if you like it. Well I do and I am sure many others do as well. Who wants an mp3 when you can have a CD or vinyl copy? Talk about ostriches with their head stuck firmly in the ground - Home Taping Is Killing Music - yeah too right it did - not! Why do I mention this? Well it seems some are embracing the blogs rather than trying to shut down the hands that feed them. Like this e-mail I received:

I just wanted to let you know about an unreleased Kills MP3 we've come across. Universal Records has hired Drillteam Media, Insound's sister company, to do the online marketing for the Kills' upcoming album 'No Wow.' I myself work primarily with Insound although I help out a bit with Drillteam's music projects. In any case, through this marketing project for The Kills we've gotten a hold of an unreleased Kills track, "Run Home Slow" (it'll eventually be a B-side on the Japanese version of 'No Wow').

I just thought this might interest you since the track isn't readily available. But just so you know I've sent the track to some blogs already so I'm not sure who or when it will be posted elsewhere. So feel free to post it, pass it along, or just check it out for yourself. Also attached is the album artwork for 'No Wow.'

So here it is then and thanks for and to, common sense.
