Following on from Colins' review of The Just Joans it's time to sift through some of the other releases on Wee Pop.Wonder For All is a one woman act from New York whose minimal tunes are played on a guitar or a ukulele which seems to be the instrument of choice these days. The songs are short and sweet with most being reeled in under 65 seconds whilst accompanied by hushed vocals. However on Can't Say It, which is a staggering 2m 47 sec in length, do/does Wonder For All fully demonstrate what they are/she is about.
The modern folk revival continues with Mexican Kids At Home collective with their When We All Live In Igloos EP. I was pretty shocked at this as I have not found them that endearing in the past lumping them in with the likes of the The Deidres who you either love or hate. However this little EP has me smirking and nodding my head willingly whilst listening to their tall musical tales accompanied by harmonies and lovely boy/girl vocals. And yes it has a ukulele on it too!
Cardiff's Little My have their second EP on Wee Pop. The first was an EP of covers whilst we are treated to original compositions here. The band's live show is a joy but that doesn't necessary translate to record (erm CDR?) and in the main that's the case here. Whilst the first two tracks are pretty good or damn good in All But The Beeps Meep case tracks 3 & 4 are pale by comparison. Maybe the first two tracks should have featured on the labels first 7" vinyl release which is imminent featuring One Happy Island instead!2.5 releases out of three ain't bad!
