Slow Down Tallahasee - The Beautiful Light

With the year fast approaching the halfway mark - contenders for LP of the year are starting to jostle for position. True contenders are a little thin on the ground and that's where Slow Down Tallahassee come in. Their debut LP - 'The Beautiful Light' follows up from their killer 2007 single 'So Much For Love' (both songs from that 7" are included here) both released on Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation. And where that single shimmered with promise and gentle lo-fi indiepop the LP kicks hard. It's sassy, bold and not afraid to stray from the pure pop path whilst still managing to be a great pop record.

There is an undeniable edge to this record. It sounds well made. Solid. It is, dare I say, well produced. But the extra shine hasn't (as is often the case) stopped it from sounding thrilling, pop and fun.

Songs as good as the synth drenched, guitar driven 'Down The Alleyway' don't come along everyday. The fact that Slow Down Tallahassee have managed to pack killer song after killer song onto this record is sometimes breath taking in it's audacity - it has a near 80s production sound. It's snappy. It's clean but dirty at the same time - the distorted guitars still manage to burst out of the speakers.

'Electric Sun' is near shoegaze in it's sound - guitars wash over a simple beat and the pop hooks that Slow Down Tallahassee so expertly use are never far from the surface. It's everything that I love in pop music. And just in case you think this is some cutesy twee affair - think again - the Slow Down girls have an edge in their lyrics - by turns streetwise and filthy - just check 'Kiss Me Again' - "Put your lips between my hips and let the motherfucking good times roll". Leaving little to the imagination. And all this being sung sweetly to a hypnotic lullaby.

Overall - this is one of the best records I've heard in a fairly long time. It sits together rather wonderfully and it has more than enough variation to make for a rewarding listen, time after time. LP of the year? Could be.
