Keith John Adams - Unclever

'Unclever' is the new LP from Keith John Adams. Keith has been in a few bands down the years (The Horse Doctors and Zuno Men). Early in this decade he found himself solo and 'Unclever' is his 3rd solo record. And what a record it is - with a hint of rockabilly and garage pop - 'Unclever' has energy bursting from it's grooves. Whether it's the hook laden 'Lookin' Around The Planet' - which is just such an infectious song or the rockier 'Elizabeth Hodgkinson Warzone'. The LP loses a little impact on some of the slower songs - as they seem to pass me by - but that's probably because I am a sucker for the upbeat garage pop that KJA does best.

This record is released on Happy Happy Birthday To Me and has been available in America for a while - but the good folk in the UK can now get it in their local record shops (remember them?). I've been playing this record for months now and it's abilty to make me smile hasn't faded with repeated listening. I can imagine that KJA may not appeal to all - but if you happen to fall for his quirky pop charms 'Unclever' is a great record. I've read one blogger's description of the LP as 'Twee Punk' and I can kind of see where they are coming from as the record is raw and garagey - whilst maintaining a sense of fun and it has an undeniable pop underbelly.

For the first 40 people that pre-ordered the record Keith recorded a song for each person - taking a funny story that the person sent in with the order and turning it into a song. How he managed to write and record 43 songs in just 6 weeks - is probably something I'll never understand and being one of the people that pre-ordered I have been lucky enough to hear all 43 songs and it's a fun listen - a little rough around the edges - but essentially it's another great collection of songs. Tom has posted about these songs previously - here.

Keith John Adams is also playing at the next Lostmusic Show on Thursday June 12th and there are £4 advance tickets from We Got Tickets.
