Murmansk come from Helsinki, Finland. They make some rather nice shoegaze tinged rock'n'roll. Their debut LP Chinese Locks has recently been released on Around Your Neck. Around Your Neck is a label and collective of bands that operates both in Finland and Denmark. The label operates on a non-profit basis with an aim of releasing marginal and independent music. This is just the way 'indie' music is supposed to work - with a strong DIY ethic - so I applaud the label for their independent spirit.
I digress - let's get back to the music and Murmansk. The sound the band have is strongly linked to the sound being made at the turn of the 1990s - shoegaze rock. But this isn't swirly guitars and dreamy soundscapes - the band have a rock'n'roll heart and if you like bands like Curve, Autolux and Televise you could well find the music that Murmansk make appealing. Give them a listen - the title track of the album is available for download on their MySpace.
