Japancakes - Soon/Touched Remixes

Last year Georgia (US) based Japancakes took cover versions to a new extreme when they covered My Bloody Valentine's Loveless album in it's entirety imposing their own instrumental interpretations onto the songs. Their new single on Sonic Cathedral, the home of all things shoegaze, features two remixes of these covers.

The band's version of Soon on the Loveless covers album stayed pretty faithful to the melody and structure of the original albiet in a less harsher vein. Here on the James Rutledge remix it becomes a messy, clumsy post rock affair doing no justice to the original nor the cover itself. On the other hand the Ricardo Tobar version of Touched reminds me of the so called Balearic beat which is pretty ironic as Weatherall's remix of Soon was a classic in such circles. If you like the sound of Ibiza chillout then this is worth picking up the single for. It's has a hazy beat becoming a blissful affair. Now where's my bucket and spade as I am heading for the beach!

Soon/Touched will be out on Sonic Cathedral on June 23rd 2008.
