Glasgow's The Catalysts is the project of one Ulric Kennedy who used to be in The Mixers and The Golden Dawn. He has also co-produced the likes of The Happy Couple and Roy Moller. Kennedy first started The Catalysts back in 1985 and two singles have been released since 2004. The forthcoming Autumn Anywhere EP on Cloudberry Records will be the third. It's a great EP full of melodic pop songs. The title track has that classic 1980's jangle pop sound embedded all the way through it and Kennedy's words and vocal style are of the vintage indie pop variety. Goes On Forever sadly doesn't but it's the stand out track here being incredibly infectious to these ears which incidentally don't fall for the false fade out towards the end! Again it's vintage indie pop veering towards Sarah Records territory which is no surprise given Kennedy's history. The short but sweet The Surf Song closes the EP and manages to lure me into a lull with it's softly sung start before ending frantically. A thoroughly enjoyable and recommended EP which has been on repeat play these past couple of days.
