I could safely bet my bottom dollar (or should that be pound?) that Kings Die Kings are big, big fans of Joy Division and this is pretty apparent on their début EP The Onus. From similar sounding titles (Anticipate or Exhibitionist/Instigator) to singer Keith Routledge sounding uncannily like Ian Curtis and the bands black and white imagery it's all here. It's like the actors from the recent Control movie stepping off the screen starting a band. The only surprise is that they are from Edinburgh and not Manchester. And do you know what? I love it!
The songs follow the same pattern with thundering bass and driving guitars producing dark epic sound-scapes which perfectly matches Routledge's brooding vocals. Who cares if they sound like their heroes. Like Interpol and The Editors before them I am sure they will find their own identity sooner or later. In the meantime get hold of this perfect example of revisionist rock!
The Onus is launched next weekend (18/19 April 2008). Check the bands My Space page for the EP's availability after that date. The EP and other tracks can be streamed at Podcast Safe.
