When visiting the UK in December I was lucky enough to finally attend a SoundsXP gig, which so often have been mentioned here. It was held at "Notting Hill Arts Center", which I assumed was either an 18th century baroque concert hall, or an arts museum of some sorts. Turns out it's an unmarked basement and I walked past it twice before the good people at Music and Video Exchange across the street got me on the right track.Apparently I saw The Olympians (not The Ethiopians as I had previously assumed), The Hot Puppies and Santa Dog, which was the only band I had any previous knowledge about. While The Olympians were quite scary, and The Hot Puppies delightfully bouncy, I was most impressed by Santa Dog, and Santa Dog's album Kittyhawk is one of my picks for my favorite albums of 2007.
Sometimes likened to Throwing Muses, I also profess to hear traces of The Cardigans' album Life, particularily in "Katy". The band is currently recording 3 new songs which should see the light of day sometime soon on a single or EP release. The band is also playing a couple of dates in Italy in February and in Glasgow on January 24th.
I picked two songs from the album for your listening enjoyment, "Rosa" (which has been posted here quite a number of times before) and "Chemical" which is posted here for the first time in it's album version. About the songs Rowena Dugdale singer and guitarist says:
Chemical is "...about how we feel when we're in the early stages of love and are frightened of the overpowering emotions, it feels like a heady drug and can be sinister and dark as well as beautiful."
Santa Dog - Chemical
Rosa on the other hand "...is about the sex trade, or rather, a woman prostituting herself. When I wrote it I thought it was a song of escape but actually I wonder if she might have fallen in love with a client." Listen to the track and judge for yourselves:
Santa Dog - Rosa
The bands début 7" single Big Bang b/w Are You Hot Enough can be purchased from Sounds Experience on 7" vinyl or digital formats.
