The Just Joans - Virgin Lips (Wee Pop!)

First up - at the tail end of last year I saw The Just Joans at a Twee as Fuck night at The Macbeth in swanky Shoreditch. They were very good. I also picked up their debut LP at the same time 'Last Tango In Motherwell'. Which left me a little confused. As it didn't spark the same thrill as seeing the band live. As it happens that LP was recorded and released back in 2006 - and it seems the band have got a whole lot better since then. 'Virgin Lips' is an 8 song EP on the great WeePop! imprint. You get a lovely 3" CDr single with a cute little booklet and a funky little sleeve. The EP itself clocks in over 21 minutes. And whereas the debut LP was lo-fi and muddy sounding this new release is still lovingly lo-fi but it sparkles and shines in all the right places. This is the band I loved back last November. The cover of The Cure's 'Pictures of You' is simply a stunning and fragile version of an old favourite - the Scottish lilt of singer (Katie?) coming through beautifully. This is good indiepop. And dare I say it - it's very twee. But that's not always a bad thing. I get the feeling that The Just Joans aren't playing up to any pre-conceived notion of what twee-pop is - it's just the way they are. At times they come across as a more naive and less bitter version of Arab Strap. That's if you could imagine a very lo-fi and twee version of Arab Strap. Maybe it's just the semi-talked Scottish brogue that is evoking this comparison. Either way - I have to admit this EP is rather wonderful.
