Matt over on Scatterbrain turned a few people onto Yay! Records a few weeks back. And that can only be considered a good thing. After listening to some of the Yay! bands on my space and the like - I decided to order the first 5 singles that Yay! Records have released. I am glad I did.
Yay! 1 is by Maria (who formed in 2003 in Oxnard, California). Eric who runs Yay! Recors is (I think) in Maria. The 7" record contains three nice slices of indiepop. The lead song 'Oh Victoria' is a mighty fine pop song. The B side contains two songs and they're just as good. They have an old school indie feel. 'I Remember What It Was To Feel' is simply one of the finest songs I've had the pleasure of hearing lately. Short, slightly fuzzy and effortlessly fab with lovely female vocals. This release is limited to 1000 copies.
Yay! 2 is by Catwalk (who were started by Nick Hessler during the summer of 2005). Again the band seem to be from Oxnard, California. What is it with that place? This is 7" single is a another prime slice of indie pop. The four songs on the 7" are simple guitar pop, with a hint of glam swagger and a nod to jangle pop. It's a compelling mix and it's been on my turntable a lot since it arrived a few weeks ago. A definite keeper. And like all releases on the Yay! label - the fold out sleeve and poster have a very 80s feel. This release is limited to 250 copies.
Yay 3! is a fanzine. Which features Catwalk, Northern Two, Grady's Record Refuge and Maria. It's beautifully printed with a red hue throughout and what's more it comes with a 5" record. Yeah, a 5" vinyl record. It's a one tracked and one sided record. And the song is by Maria and it's called 'I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts'. It's a great little thing. There are only 300 of these fanzines being made.
Yay 4! is another release by Maria. Another 4 song 7" record. It's just as good, if not better, than their debut Yay! release. Again the 7" feels old school - from the sounds coming out of my speakers, to the gorgeous fold out sleeve. This is how a record label should be. The 'A' side features two songs with Eric on lead vocal duties- 'Friends Forever' and 'Baby Honey'. The B side features for my favourite song on the EP - 'One of These Days You Will See'. It has Nicole on lead vocals. The last song we are treated to is 'How Wonderful' which has fine chiming guitars as it's intro. I am loving this band. This release is limited to 250 copies.
Yay 5! is the labels latest release and it's by Pam & Teri. They seem to be a duo from Fillmore, California. This is a 2 song ('Lucy' and 'The Cost of Happiness') 7" single and it's an altogether more fragile offering from the label. Gentle female vocals are accompanied by a piano. It's rather dreamy. This one is less my cup of tea, than those that has gone before. But this is bound to win over those that are taken with the gentler side of indiepop.
