Sparky's Magic Piano are London based consisting of Oliver Bartlett (no relation) and Marion Turnball. They have just released their self released début album titled Feel The Beat and Do It Anyway and it's the best way I have found to spend thirty six minutes recently. The majority of the album is delicate electro pop similar to those Saint Etienne produced bands that appeared in the beginning of the 1990's like Supermarket or Golden. This is clearly evident throughout the album and on songs like Mend or Something Somewhere it really stands out. This is due in no small part to Marion's voice. The band also have their indie pop side and on glockenspiel driven tracks like You Like Her they could easily give contemporaries like Pocketbooks and The School a run for their money.
One tribute I can pay is that songs like Something Somewhere or Kaleidoscope are strong enough to be singles in their own right. Cloudberry are you listening? The album also has plenty of variety - I swore I heard a bit of two step in there at some point alongside some experimental synth riffs that wouldn't sound out of place in a Wintergreen set. Truly I get nothing but a positive vibe from listening to this. Let's hope it isn't overlooked during the Yuletide stampede.
