It’s not everyday that you get sent the sixth album by a band and wonder why you haven’t noticed them before. Especially when you look through the liner notes and discover one of your friends is singing backing vocals on some of the tracks. The Ladybug Transistor are one of those great bands with no particular frills or showbiz tricks, they merely rely on writing great pop tunes.Always On The Telephone is very stylised sixties pop which sounds a bit like the Shadows in places, I’m Not Mad Enough is crystalline pop with perfectly pronounced vocals, the languid Here Comes The Rain has doubled vocals and Charlatans style organ pop and Terry sounds like Edwyn Collins fronting the Velvet Underground.
Add to that the way For No Other glides like Richard Hawley, the brisk cool pop of In-Between and the delightful Broken Links with added Mexican brass and you have a very fine pop album indeed. And six albums in that’s no mean feat at all.
