As I have written previously the band have in the shape of front woman Chiara a poweful figure similar to the women of punk such as Pauline Murray (Penetration), Poly Styrene (X-Ray Spex) or Judy Evans (Girls At Our Best). They have also been compared by others to the Darling Buds and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs with those elements I have previously described fitting those comparisons perfectly.
Knives is the bands début single albeit in download format only and sounds like the post punk bands mentioned above remixed for the 21st century. Sounding raw and fresh they put the synths and guitars through a heavy load coupled with the shouty but impressive vocals of their Italian frontwoman. Whilst she is no doubt the focal point of the band this isn't a one woman show and their live performances testify to that.
Like fellow Leeds outfit Sky Larkin the Chiara L's are making some of the more exciting music of 2007. Treat yourself to this Christmas cracker!
Knives is out now. Buy it here.
You can listen to the single on My Space. Give Odio a listen as well - it's great and sums up all what I love about the band.
