Stuffy/The Fuses - Angels Are Ace

I know very little about Stuffy and the Fuses. I bought this LP on a whim. Which is odd given that I can check bands out on My Space before spending the cash on a unknown band in this internet age. I did have an inkling that it would be up my street though. I didn't buy completely blind. Stuffy was an occasional drummer with Sarandon. A band I love. And when I picked this CD up in Rough Trade - the helpful notes told me it was engineered by Steve Albini. That was the hook. I took a chance. And boy was it worth it.

This LP starts with a keyboard refrain (it makes me think of The Beatles) but the opening two minutes are a prelude for what is about to come. On second track 'Ahhh Song' the LP signals it's intent. Drums. Drums. That deep thud. Bass. So much bass. That deep thud again. This is why I love music. This is a record that grabs my attention. I have been playing it constantly for the past week and a bit. The sound that Steve Albini manages to pull from the band is the sort of sound I remember loving when I was a youngster. This LP rocks. The band it most reminds me of is The Breeders and especially their Albini produced debut 'Pod'. 'Metal Queen Theme' is one of the stand out songs (oddly not engineered by Steve Albini). It's nearly metal. It's nearly indie. It's decidely wonderful. It's set to be the next single from LP. In my world it would be number one for weeks, nay, months.

The band have kindly allowed me to post one of the songs to download. So I chose to go with 'Joe C (is an Idiot)'. Why? Because it's a great slab of an indie rock. It has a near stereolab organ sound before the band kick in. I love it.
