The State of Samuel - Here Come the Floods

The State of Samuel is the musical project of Samuel Petersson (he's a Swede). This release is a dual release on Humblebee Recordings (Canada) and Total Gaylord Records (USA). I don't know a whole lot about The State of Samuel and on this record Samuel seems to have fleshed out his sound with a three piece band and various helpers (on strings, brass etc). After reading his website it seems Samual has been making music for over 10 years, originally releasing cassette recordings. It's all very Daniel Johnston. And that's a good a starting point as anywhere. He's nowhere as madcap as the aforementioned Mr. Johnston but his approach to lo-fi pop is similar. Not too similar, though. This is a fine little piece of lo-fi indie pop.My only issue with the CD has been Samual vocal style. It's that nasally sound. You either love this kind of singing style or you don't. I am usually in the don't camp. But I have listened to this LP a few times now and I find that on this occassion I am not put off by the vocals and I can appreciate the songs on offer for what they are: Nice and pleasant little pop songs. This isn't gonna shake the world up -but what record in 2007 is going to do that? Very few, I'd argue. This is a good pop record. A little rough around the edges and all the more charming for it.
The band have made two songs from the LP available to download from their website. Here they are for your listening pleasure. I'd recommend 'Square Roots'.
