The sounds of autumn (or a wee musical round up)

Here's a little round up of good stuff I have found lately as the trees shed their leaves and the nights draw in.
Let's start with Ein Astronaut. They seem to be a one man band (it's hard to tell) that hail from Hamburg in Germany. There is very little information on the band/person available and what I have been able to google has all been in German (no surprise really) - but alas I am not a speaker of that language. So I remain in the dark over the band's history. But that doesn't stop me liking the sounds I hear.
The four songs they have for streaming on My Space are all rather good pop songs. They mix up that German krautrock guitar sound with sweet but simple pop melodies and maybe a hint of Elliot Smith in the singers style. You can stream four of their songs here.
The Hillfields are a London based band that I have taken quiet a shine too. A three piece comprised of Rob Boyd (guitars, vocals), Grant Wilkinson (bass) and recent addition Carlos Russell (drums). Rob was formally in a band called Partition who I'd never heard before. They seem worthy of further investigation too.
The band list their influences as Wire, Sarah Records, C86 and The Chills amongst others. I think the four demos they have up for streaming (one song 'Spoon' is also available for download) show a lot of promise. They make the sort of sounds that I can fall in love with. Gently chiming guitars and nice melodies combine to perfect effect. Head over to their My Space to stream their songs.
Jonquil are a band from Oxford, England. They've recently released their second LP 'Lions'. It's a follow up to their debut LP 'Sunny Casinos' which baffled me and confused me for long enough for it to become a quirky favourite from 2006.
They describe themselves as both folky and experimental and the title song of their new LP 'Lions' is stunning whirl of song. Perhaps coming close to the sounds that Beirut (the band/person - not the place) have made recently. Having recently bought 'Lions' I am fast becoming a fan of the band. The curiosity that was piqued with their debut release is slowly becoming something more. Something to cherish. I suggest you take a listen and maybe you, like me, will be won over by their haunting sounds.
