The Scaremongers - You Can Do Nothing Wrong (In My Eyes) / Nodding Dog

Double A-side out now, available on CD at Vinyl Tap, and downloadable from their website. The Scaremongers are my new favourite band - it's official. Granted - I've only heard these two songs - but I'm sold. What's not to love? They're like the good natured northern uncles of indiepop, all regional accents and bittersweet girl-boy exchanges buoyed up on toe-tapping, chipper melodies.
Nodding Dog is a swaying disco pop song, whose crunchy guitars and light handclaps belie the sad tale of a couple who fail to survive the hankering for a naff wedding and all it entails - aunties, sarnies and wedding dress meringues. Simon Armitage's lyrics magically conjure the image of a luridly lit wedding disco dancefloor with Del Shannon's "Runaway" playing on the mobile disco as grannies and kiddies hit the buffet. The Scaremongers, like Pulp and all the other best kitchen sink bands, have got a stiff northern upper lip which transforms the saddest of situations into the funniest.

You Can Do Nothing Wrong (In My Eyes) is another story of a couple, this time an altogether happier one. "Pills and smokes" and tabs and wraps" are all forgotten in this mutual lovesong, in which nothing is dearer than a loved-up boy and girl and the Yorkshire countryside. The jangles, organs and Speedy Sue's sweet, plainitive voice are just lovely.
I'm putting out a plea now for some live Scaremongers gigs - anyone who wants to join my "Please Please Please Can The Scaremongers Play In A Town Near Me?" campaign should write to me at Indie Mp3.
