Another release on HHBTM records. This time it's the turn of Red Pony Clock. A band that hail from California, USA. The band seem to have been around for 5 or 6 years and have grown from a one man band to a loose collective of over 10 people at any one time.I've had this CD for a while now and to say it's not been an instant hit with me would be a gross understatement. I have played the LP a fair few times now. And I keep coming back to 'God Made Dirt'. It has something. But I am still not convinced that the band have the songs to back their ambitious musical sound. The band take on 60s pop. They also have strong indiepop undercurrents to what the band do. But the LP seems to suffer under by the sheer amount of things going on. One minute we have a pop band with brass underpinning the songs. The next minute we are plunged into a surreal psychedelic folk sound. Then it's a return to that 60s girl group sound. Or something. A band that springs to mind whilst giving 'God Made Dirt' another spin is Super Furry Animals minus their rock leanings. I can't really decide whether I like this record. I certainly wouldn't describe it as dull. Like I hinted at earlier I think the band lack the killer songs to turn a curious LP into a real winner. File under: Confused, but worth a listen.
