'In Camera' is the debut release from Arthur & Yu. It's also the debut release for new SubPop imprint Hardly Art. The band are primarily Grant Olsen and Sonya Westcott although they are joined by a fuller band from time to time. I bought this LP on a whim, after liking what I heard on the bands My Space page. I should do this more often, because 'In Camera' is a real nice mix of indie, pop and country folk. The vocals are shared between both Grant and Sonya and it's one of those records that will take a few listens to grab you. The influences range from folky Neil Young and Simon And Garfunkel through to more contemporary indiepoppers like Peter Bjorn and John and The Concretes. Like I said it takes a few listens for 'In Camera' to nestle itself into your subconscious - but if you give the LP more than a few listens you will be rewarded as songs are the sort that could be with you for a lifetime. The LP has a very timeless feel and indeed it sounds like it could have been recorded any time since the late 1960s. 'After Glow' which has a strong country feel and the lyrical theme of LP is often about travelling and moving on. 'Half Years' has those 60s girl group drums married to a more folk sound and I really like the way these too contrasting styles work. I can hear echoes of Leonard Cohen. This LP may not appeal to the pure indiepop fan as it's template is a lot wider than simple twee songs - but for those prepared to mix up their indiepop with a dash of country folk, this could well be one of the records that will you will learn to love.
