The Answering Machine - Silent Hotels

The Answering Machine have been coveted recently by the likes of the NME and The Guardian. The latter even stated "it's like 1986 all over again" when writing about the bands love of frisbees, knitwear, anoraks etc. It's a pity they missed the one vital ingredient which is the music itself! Whilst the band takes some of the poppier elements of C86 and it's associated jangle/shambling bands its only a small part of their overall sound which veers towards the likes of The Pixies and to a lesser extent the Strokes.Silent Hotels is a simply done but effective pop song containing some guitar riffs to die for and some outstanding programmed percussion from their drum machime affectionately known as Mustafa Beat. Highlight for me though is the flip side It's Over! It's Over! It's Over!. It twists and pounds it's way into your senses with harmonious backing vocals in abundance. It certainly warrants being an a-side.
If you want a pointer to other comparable British bands over the past year The Bridge Gang and The Lodger spring to mind. The single is due for release on the 18th June 2007. You can order it here.
