Paul Hartnoll - Please

Paul Hartnoll (ex Orbital) follows up the excellent Patchwork Quilt single with another single for the Kids label titled Please.

Please features The Cure's Robert Smith on vocals because Hartnoll thinks he has "a whiney-bendy voice" which suited the lead lines he had written for the song. Personally I have never been a fan of Smith's voice or the majority of The Cure's music. Nothing on the single nor the majority of the seven (!) remixes convinces me otherwise. Smith's vocal tones just grate in my soul regardless of which mix you listen to although the music on The PH and Culprit 1 remixes provide a brief respite. I guess you have to be a big Smith fan to appreciate this.

Luckily the flip side, the non album track Old School Tie, saves the day. It's a lovely electronic journey which will be obviously pointed out as similar to Orbital's work. It's only available on the CD of the single so I would recommend buying that format if any at all. Please is a disappointment and let's hope Hartnoll's collaborations on the album produce a better result.

Please is out on 23 April 2007. Hartnoll's debut solo album The Ideal Connection follows on 28 May 2007.
