Friends Of The Park have been getting plenty of rave reviews of late from the likes of Alan McGee to Gideon Coe as well as plaudits in the music blog world. The three piece, who hail from Raynes Park, formed in a London pub in 2006. Towards the end of 2006 they played their first gigs and also self released their debut 7" single Want In which sold out soley from their My Space page. Their second single Buckle Up, Sunshine will be released on 19th March on The Young And Lost Club label who released debut singles from the likes of Good Shoes, Vincent Vincent & The Villans and erm, Larrikin Love.
Well that's the introduction over with. The question remains are the band any cop? The answer, based on a demo from November 2006, is a simple yes. The band judging by their sound have a range of influences from swing, motown, Elvis, garage rock and, rather than simply recreating a sound, they update it with style & panache. Listening to the vocals of lead singer Bobby remind me of Frank Sinatra transposed with Nick Caves high spirits whilst the rest of the band create a sound which wouldn't have been out of place in the clubs of 1960's Soho. It's good to see a London band do something so different as the capital has been devoid of much originality based on the bands I have seen over the past 12 months.
If you wanted to bracket Friends Of The Bride you may have a pretty hard job. Try filing under "indie soul".
Stream the singles and two more tracks from the bands My Space page.
