Singles Round-Up

With Muzzle No. 1 The Whip have very wisely gone back to their New Order-ish roots found on last years Frustration single rather than returning to the dodgy ground of "electro-clash" territory as they did last time out on Trash. Whilst not as immediately accessible as Frustration it's an echo of the darker side of 1980's pop namely that influenced by Manchester and to a lesser extent Liverpool. The song itself is about getting rid of anger and there can be no better way than playing this back. It's backed with remixes by Black Ghost & Shadow Dancer. [My Space link]

Mumm-Ra (he was the bad bad mummy from Thundercats fact fans!) follow up their last single Out Of The Question with a rather insipid track in the shape of What Would Steve Do?. This single seems like a very bad cut & paste job of everything else out there and defies the point of a band having any originality whatsoever. If this is what the NME calls spine tingling then our kids are having a very bad music education indeed. You can guess what my advice to Steve would be. [My Space link]

I am not sure why an indie pop e-zine or whatever you want to call us has been sent the new Biffy Clyro single but it proves a welcome relief after Mumm-Ra. Whilst I am not adverse to a bit of rock Saturday Superstore just seems to be yelling permanent playback on Kerrang or MTV at me. It's just a bit to comfortable - whatever happened to a bit of rebellion eh lads? [My Space link]

The Maple State on the other hand know how to write a good tune with their début single Joanna. Whilst I have seen references to the EMO and The Smiths on other sites I think that is a bit far removed and far fetched to be honest. Whilst there is certainly a lot of 1980's influences I think the band have updated it pretty well rather than relying on pure imitation. The flip side Rain In High is even better with some fantastic drumming from John Goodwin and singer Gregory Counsell's voice has the classic English indie sounding ring to them. Promising stuff.
