Phil Lewis - Ancient Light

Phil Lewis is a singer songwriter from Wales who has put a band together to record his latest self released album.

Generally I would run a mile anyone from anyone who cites Christianity, REM or Crowded House as influences but intrigue got the better of me and I was surprised to find a couple of really enjoyable songs on Ancient Light. For example Don't Give Up, Don't Give In is a catchy indie pop tune you could imagine Ian Broudie producing. There is even a hint of Echo and the Bunnymen on No Accident but sadly these tunes are in the minority.

The rest of the album tries to hard to keep up with Lewis's influences and the songs get bogged down, unable to move in any direction and repeated listens confirm as much. It's a shame as Lewis obviously has some great ideas which have failed to blossom here. Time will tell if future releases will bear any fruit or become as good as Don't Give Up, Don't Give In. However respect should be given to anyone who has a belief in their music that they are prepared to release it themselves.
