Baby Calendar

I have been making my way through the internet searching out some of the bands that were new to me as a result of the Twee Net 2006 Poll. One such band was Baby Calendar who were voted the best new band of 2006.

The band hail from Miami and thankfully don't sound like a beat machine. They have released three albums to date with the first two being self released. The latest one was Gingerbread Dog and was released last year on Happy Birthday To Me Records. I am not sure where to place the band. On listening to the tracks that they have made available they are certainly on the rockier side of indie pop. They have a fuzzy guitar sound with shared boy/girl vocals although I have to admit I prefer the songs where Jackie takes the lead. More admirably, whilst reading about them on their website, the band seem to possess a punky/DIY ethos to their approach which sits fine with me.

I prefer the songs from their last effort which seem to be a bit poppier to me especially Lemon Snaps which is the best of the songs they have on offer. One band worth checking out but I am not sure they are worthy of being called the best new band of 2006 based on the listening evidence available.
