The Mardy Bums - Put Wood In Hole

Anyone who receives death threats from the fans of the Arctic Monkeys and Little Man Tate are alright by me. That's what has happened to The Mardy Bums who's indiepop pisstaking of the so called New Yorkshire Scene has not gone down well on the forums of the aforementioned bands! The single itself is funny, short and sweet and not unlike Helen Love having a few beers with Half Man Half Biscuit.

You can stream the tracks via their My Space page.

The single is out on Thee SPC on 24th July 2006. You can buy it here.

The Silent Type - Kneel

Something different from The Kids Label who have even abandoned the 7" inch format in favour of a 10" single for this release.

The Silent Type are based in Richmond, Virginia and have produced a single with two epic tracks taken from two previous releases in the States. Kneel, taken from last years Of Writing/Of Violence is a seven minute masterpiece with it's audio landscape stretching far and wide. It's kicked off by drumming that sounds like it's place should be on a death march or retreat and is joined by ethereal vocals before the inevitable and some might say glorious climax.

The second track Knives, Stones and Curses is taken from 2004's Scarlet and Pure EP is put in the shade by the first track but is still a minor classic in it's own right and if you are a fan of Sigur Ros or Mogwai then this single should be right up your street.

The single is out on Kids on July 24th - you can buy it here.

Stream tracks from My Space. You can also find two tracks from Of Writing/Of Violence available to download here.

Monkey Swallows The Universe - Science

The new single from Monkey Swallows The Universe features three new tracks that were not available on their critically acclaimed debut album The Bright Carvings that was released earlier this year.

If you have not heard them yet (and why not?) the band produce an acoustic folk pop brand of music that has drawn comparisons to Belle & Sebastian amongst others. All these tracks are wonderful and prove that you don't need to make a racket to get noticed especially when you have got a vocalist with a golden voice. Nat Johnson's vocals are something else and the nearest I can compare them with are Beth Orton's. My favourite track here is the Aberfeldy-ish undertones of Florence which induces some worrying foot tapping!

Monkey Swallows The Universe - Science

The band have a My Space page but no tracks from this release are yet available. However the free download single Sheffield Shanty is still available here.

The single is out on Thee SPC on 24th July 2006. You can buy it here.

Cats on Fire - Draw In The Reins

Finlands Cats On Fire are an indie-pop band that owes more than just a small gratitude to the English 1980's scene and this is evident throughout the five songs on this EP.

What can I hear on the EP? The Smiths for a start. Mattias Bjorkas lyrics and vocals nod towards a certain Morrissey influence to these ears. However it's not, despite the seriousness of the lyrics, all doom and gloom as the mood is lightened in a Brilliant Corners type of way on the more jangle-ish tracks. All the songs are pretty good but the standout track for me is Draw In The Reins with it's infectious melodies and harmonious vocals supported by well written lyrics.

This is a standout EP and despite being only the second release on Fraction could well cement that label's reputation for producing high quality indie pop. Simply put just buy it.

Cats On Fire - Higher Grounds

The EP is out now and you can get your hands on it here. A large number of mp3's from previous releases can be found on the bands music page.
