Happy Happy Birthday to me...... Records.

A lot is happening over at Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records in Athens, Georgia. They've just signed two bands; M Coast (formerly known as Marshmallow Coast) and Ideal Free Distribution. Other upcoming releases include a single by Boyracer, the third Smittens' album, a DVD music compilation and a singles club ("7 inch singles mind you) is in preparation.

And in addition to all this, this prolific little record company hosts the annual Athens Popfest, starting on august 8th. The line-up includes most of their current roster, of which you'll hear sound samples below, and a host of other bands including The Specific Heats from Boston, Brooklyn's awesome The Besties, 4AD's The Mountain Goats, Hofner-toting Deerhoof, Ponies in the Surf and Bunnygrunt.....and more and more and more...

The label's story very much appeals to me:

Happy Happy Birthday to Me records started out as a one-off compilation CD to be given away with the 4th anniversary issue of the Bee's Knees zine in July of 1999. I asked lots of bands that I had interviewed in past issues, and that I knew to contribute songs, and almost all of them did. I then shopped the CD/Zine to some distributors, and it presold more copies than I had planned on pressing. So I upped the amount pressed, and had so much fun doing the CD, I then decided to jump right in to doing a 7" singles club. While working on the club, I released a few CDs, and the rest is history... it was never really meant to be a label, it just sorta happened.

And here is a showcase of HHBTM relesaes, much more is on their web page.

Baby Calendar - Within Cell Walls
Boyracer - Where to place your Trust
Bugs eat Books - On to you
Cars can be Blue - I used to think
Russian Spy Camera - Svengali whats the Caper
