Boy Omega (Martin Gustafsson named after English footballer Martin Chivers!) is from Sweden so if you are expecting an indie-pop feast which is endemic to that country you are going to be sadly disappointed. What you get is a collection of folk tales for the 21st century which are not to far removed from the works of fellow country woman El Perro De Mar.Most of the songs are pretty melancholic and, with the sun shining down outside, you could be wondering why Boy Omega bothers and be tempted to hit the eject button. However stop, look closer and you will find some well written beautiful songs. This is especially so when contributions from members of fellow Swedish band Audrey and the violin playing of one Karin Wilberg weaves sensory patterns into the tracks, taking them sailing up into the clouds. There are also some nice thought provoking musical interludes which breaks up the sombreness of the album providing the opportunity to listen and look at the album from another angle.
The best tracks are the almost feisty By Midnight We'll Give It A Go, Leafless and I Name You Isolation which has Gustafsson singing the word isolation over the albums most liveliest passage of music.
You really need to be a fan of this type of music or you are going to find that, even just under 43 minutes, this album may still be just a bit too long. However if you persist, just as I have done, you will find a grower of an album waiting to be loved. (7/10)
I have previously written about Boy Omega - the free web EP mentioned here is still available for downloading.
The album is out now and be purchased via Stereo Test Kit Records in the UK. Additionally you can stream tracks via Boy Omega's My Space page.
