Sounds XP Presents - A Quick Digress

The pullout of the Victorian English Gentlemen's Club (who neglected to inform us until a week before the gig) and the short time available to readvertise the event had an effect on the attendance at last night's Sounds XP presents gig. The Purple Turtle was quite sparse at some points during the evening.

It was a shame as all four bands playing put in great performances. The Known Unknowns kicked off with their brand of space rawk and entertaining moves from frontman Neil (himself a contributor to Sounds XP) in an okay set despite their music not being my usual fare. Surprise of the night for me was Theoretical Girl. I was not too keen on her music on her My Space page but live she was a revelation with her electronic based art-punk which sounded so much fresher in a live environment. New single It's All Too Much was the highlight of a short but sweet set.

The Bridge Gang were up next and regular readers of this blog will need no introduction to this band who produced another brutal set which pounded away at your senses. It's over just as it began with London Sky Tonight, Sarah's Brother and soon to be released single Pangs Of Guilt shining through as always and I cannot ever imagine being bored by this lot. The Bridgette's liked it too and Lucy's "too cool to dance" bait to the majority of the motionless crowd was not bitten. Mind you they were motionless themselves most of the set!

Headlining were Reading's Pete and The Pirates who were obviously disappointed by the low turnout judging by their early sarcastic wit. However once they got that chip off their shoulders they put in a performance which cemented their reputation as one of the best live acts around. I was not familiar with their songs so I don't know track names etc but it was enough for me to order the single this morning.

The next gig is arranged at the same venue with The Bishops headlining on 01 March 2006. Details will be posted nearer the time.
