Bromheads Jackets/Bridge Gang - Gig Review 03/02/06

It also serves a decent pint of ale, far removed from the bland carling lager at horrible sponsored venues - you know the ones that i'm talking about.
It's Friday night and it's can only be one thing - the Wolfgang Bopp night! The DJ is playing the Yeah Yeah Yeahs ridiculously loud but the thriving South London student crowd don't seem to mind even though the venue is close to bursting at the seams. First up is The Bridge Gang fresh from their performance at the Sounds XP Presents night two days earlier. Maybe two gigs so close together is not a good idea as the band seemed to be lacking energy. London Sky Tonight, their dynamic opener, was subdued and was not played with too much relish and this set the tone for the rest of the gig which lacked spark. The new song (Determination?) stayed at the starting gate and only Neutrino and Sarahs Brother seemed to carry any weight. Hopefully just a one off but I would rather see a low par Bridge Gang than some other bands on the local circuit I could mention.
It was obvious the crowd had come to see the Bromhead Jackets. The moment the band came on the football style chanting of the band's name took a hold and some of the audience couldn't contain their excitement heading onto stage to dance with the band and, as the night wore on, taking the lead singers example propelling themselves into the massed crowd with increasing regularity.
Taking The Libertines as their template the band steamrollered into their songs about Friday nights out, getting into fights, getting pissed and eating kebabs on the way home. There was not much variety in their tunes and recent single What Ifs & Maybes could have been any of them. Still the band themselves were highly entertaining to watch, bonding with the audience, without actually being musically inspiring.
