This years Popfest in Northampton MA, gathered together many fine bands, but one in particular totally blew the socks off me and my friends there, namely Asobi Seksu from New York. Considerably louder than the other indiepop/tweepop bands there, I'm afraid they actually blew a few of the audience away too, quite literally. Their music ranges from innocently poppy to toweringly loud as walls of distorted guitars suddenly hammer at your eardrums, very pleasantly I might add. They've just finished recording a new album due out in spring, and have gotten some very favorable reviews for their self titled debut album. Likened to Stereolab, Jesus and Mary Chain, Sonic Youth and mostly to My Bloody Valentine they do have their own sound and the energy of a hurricane.
Check out the following songs, and indeed you will spot the MBV influence without even listening to the song "Sooner".
Asobi Seksu - I'm happy but you don't like me
Asobi Seksu - Sooner
Asobi Seksu - Walk on the moon
You'll find more songs on their website, including their thundering cover of Ramones' "Merry christmas, I don't want to fight tonight", and you can also visit them on Mysapce.
