The Besties

Insisting they are a punk band, The Besties are nevertheless one of the finest Indiepop bands in US today...nay! in the universe, and they'll be releasing their first album on Valentine's Day 2006 on Skipping Stones Records. I had the pleasure of watching them play at Popfest in Northampton, MA. this year, and again in Cake Shop in NYC, and their setup, with Kelly and Marisa on Keyboards and Rikky on guitar, all of them singing and backed up by silly and primitive casio drum beats, works wonders. Their songs are simple and devoid of any pretentiousness, filled with the joy of making simple and catchy tunes with what they have, and no attempts at sounding professional...I think. Perhaps I'm offending them horribly now.

But no matter, you can look forward to their debut album, and in the meantime stream some songs from their Myspace page, visit their official home page, and find even more songs at download.com. My particular favorites are "Pirate Song" and "Space Song"; the latter sporting the lyrics "Tap-tapping on your plastic helmet, trouble breathing from the lack of atmosphere, baby we can climb aboard your rocket, honey you can take me far away from here..."
