‘The are known knowns – things which we know we know, know unknowns – things which we know we know we don’t know, and unknown unknowns, things which we don’t know we don’t know.’
Donald Rumsfeld
Known Unknowns have been in existence in some form for the best part of a decade. A good deal of that time was spent ‘paying the dues’ as one of that vast and terrible army of bands up and down the country playing vaguely angsty rock and, inevitably, calling themselves The Shards.
Over the last year, however, that unfortunate affliction has been cast aside and, with the help of a natty quote from Donald Rumsfeld vis a vis US intelligence on Al Qaeda and Iraq’s weapons, the band gave itself a new name and a collective kick up the backside. Demonstrating his unstinting, febrile commitment, lead singer Neil Walsh went and purchased no less than 100 jiffy bags to facilitate, as your boss might say, the cause.
Known Unknowns have since got on with the business of writing spiky, distinctive songs about the misinformation campaigns of advertisers, politicians, pop stars, actors, marketeers, lawyers and business leaders who think that what they do is either too profound, too dishonest or too dull to be expressed in normal language.
